Researchers at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) developed a new breed called Uni-Gold. It is designed to thrive in rural Pakistan, especially in areas with very hot weather. In fact, the breed can endure harsh climates, making it a practical solution for local farmers.

One of the best things about the Uni-Gold chicken is that it can lay three times more eggs than regular desi hens. Additionally, it needs much less food to produce those eggs. Therefore, it is a great choice for small-scale farmers who want a more efficient and cost-effective way of raising chickens. The poultry industry is the second-largest industry in Pakistan after textiles, providing affordable, high-quality protein and creating jobs for 1.5 million people.
However, the industry greatly depends on importing parent chickens for commercial layers and broilers. For this purpose, the commercial layers total 42.6 million chickens, which produce 11.3 billion eggs each year. Rural poultry farming has about 40.18 million chickens, contributing 4.01 billion eggs annually. Altogether, this shows that rural poultry farming is still very important, as it makes up 36% of the total egg production in Pakistan each year.

Rural women play a key role in poultry farming because they often have the skills to care for the chickens. Poultry farming, in turn, can improve their status and nutrition and benefit the whole family. Best Chickens for Eggs: Local vs Exotic Breeds
In Pakistan, local chicken breeds do not produce as many eggs, making them less profitable. But, these chickens have cultural value, especially the Aseel breed, which people mostly raise for cock fighting. Poor farmers in villages mostly raise local chickens, but exotic breeds like Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red are taking over. These exotic breeds are promoted by the Poultry Production Department, which uses two foreign parent breeds to create them.
The Need for Better Egg Laying Chicken Breeds in Pakistan
To fix this issue, it became clear that Pakistan needed to create its local breed that could perform better in rural conditions and lower the cost of importing exotic chickens. Hence, the Uni-Gold breed was developed for backyard farming with help from the Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB) at UAF.
Researchers created it using local, adapted chicken breeds, giving it a unique color pattern called barring. As a result, they tested two types of Uni-Gold chickens: full neck and naked neck. They tested these chickens in central and southern Punjab under low to medium farming conditions. Because of its ability to lay up to 210 eggs, each weighing about 50 grams, the Uni-Gold breed proved to be highly productive, according to the Poultry Research Institute of the Government of Punjab.
Future of Best Egg Laying Chickens in Pakistan
Eventually, they will increase production by establishing an Indigenous Chicken Research and Development Centre at UAF. Furthermore, this center is expected to help scale up production and improve the breed’s performance.
